Susanne Merlo
Susanne has worked in clay for over thirty years. She started
working in clay in high school and has always found some
way to continue that work throughout her life. She attended
American River and Sacramento City Colleges on and off
while raising and supporting her son. She became interested
in graphic art, and worked in that field while attending
California State University, Sacramento where she received a
BA in Liberal Studies and a Multiple Subject Teaching
Credential.
Currently, she works as an elementary school teacher.
Most of her sculptural work is figurative. Influences are
varied. Nature is always a significant influence, but myths,
legends, fables, and other fantasy elements find their way
into her work. Much of her small work is meant to be held in
your hand. The small pieces are talesmen-like, and
reminiscent of a Zuñi fetishes.
She also makes pottery on the wheel, and has started
making miniature pottery. She enjoys the technical challenge
that this presents.
